Secretary of State Cord Byrd is inviting the public to join in community giving at The Grove Museum's annual Winter Open House on Saturday, December 7. The event will run from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., offering free educational activities and seasonal treats for visitors of all ages.
The Grove Museum is partnering with Elder Care Services, Inc. for a giving drive aimed at assisting seniors in the Tallahassee/Big Bend area. Items being collected include space heaters, microwaves, bed linens, blankets, towels and washcloths, and nutritional supplement drinks. A representative from Elder Care Services will be present to collect these items during the event.
"This season of the year provides us all with great opportunities to give back and the annual Open House event is a great chance to bring our community together and showcase The Grove Museum," said Secretary of State Cord Byrd. "Come enjoy a family-friendly atmosphere, holiday spirit, and experience the site’s storied history."
The Winter Open House schedule includes vendors and community partners open from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with participants such as Chocolate Dandies, Frother’s Daughter, UF/IFAS Leon County Extension Office, John G. Riley Center and Museum, WFSU, along with Elder Care Services. At 10:30 a.m., there will be a guided Historic Preservation Tour followed by a tree-lighting ceremony at 2:00 p.m., accompanied by a guided Nature Walk. Crafts, lawn games, and guided tours of the museum will be available throughout the day until closing.
The Grove Museum's mission is to preserve the Call-Collins House and engage the public in dialogue about civil rights and American history. Built around 1840 by enslaved craftspeople, it stands as one of Florida's best-preserved antebellum residences.
