Main Street Bartow recognized as December's top Florida main street program

Today, Secretary of State Cord Byrd announced that Main Street Bartow in Polk County has been named the December 2024 Florida Main Street Program of the Month. Byrd highlighted Bartow's historical significance and its role in promoting economic growth. "As a Florida Main Street program, Bartow has become a destination for understanding and appreciating the rich history of Central Florida while encouraging modern and sustainable economic growth," said Secretary Byrd.

Bartow's history spans over 12,000 years, with Americans first settling there in 1851. Originally known as Peace Creek, it was renamed Bartow in 1862 and became the seat of Polk County. In 1867, Jacob Summerlin donated land for key community buildings including the first county courthouse and high school. By the late 19th century, Bartow had grown significantly and became a hub for phosphate mining in the early 20th century.

Main Street Bartow, Inc., established in 1984 to preserve and improve the central business district, received its designation as a Florida Main Street Program in 1986. Since then, it has reported significant investments and job creation. The district hosts various businesses alongside government offices.

Linda Holcomb, Executive Director for Main Street Bartow, emphasized the importance of maintaining a vibrant downtown area: “Main Street is the symbol of how we care for our community both in the physical sense...and in the economic sense showing our mix of thriving businesses.” She noted that special events are crucial to attracting visitors and investors to downtown Bartow.
