The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has announced a significant year for the Florida Saltwater Fishing State Records, following the introduction of three new categories in January: Adult and Youth Length and Youth All Tackle. The response from Florida anglers was substantial, resulting in the highest number of records since 2016 when the FWC assumed control from the International Game Fish Association.
New records for adults this year included Joseph Ingold for red drum, Josh Hulslander for snook in November, Tucker Robertson for snook in December, Chris Schultz for red snapper on fly tackle, D. Albrey Arrington for schoolmaster, Thomas Schendera for blueline tilefish in August, and Alek Williams also for blueline tilefish in November.
Youth anglers were particularly successful. Krieger Brasseale set five records during spring break: two Youth Length records (red drum and snook) and three Youth All Tackle (sheepshead, spotted seatrout, and Spanish mackerel). Julia Bernstein achieved two Youth Length records (permit and bonefish) and four Youth All Tackle records (cobia, gray [mangrove] snapper which she later broke again, yellowtail snapper).
Towards the end of the year, Luke Ormston surpassed Brasseale’s Youth Length record with a large snook caught in fall.
“Florida is truly the Fishing Capital of the World," said Jessica McCawley, Director of the Division of Marine Fisheries Management. She noted how inspiring it is to see both adults and youth participating enthusiastically.
Despite numerous new records being set this year, opportunities remain open with vacancies available for two Adult Length categories as well as several Youth All Tackle categories. Additionally, more youth opportunities will be introduced in 2025 with new species added to record attempts.
McCawley expressed hope that increasing record opportunities would inspire young anglers further: “By increasing the number of record opportunities for youth anglers we hope to continue inspiring them.”
Record holders receive recognition certificates from Jessica McCawley along with custom metal sculptures provided by The Metal Edge.
