On December 15, 2024, Sergeant Elio Diaz was shot during a traffic stop and later died at the hospital. He is survived by his wife and four children. Sergeant Diaz served for eleven years with the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office, demonstrating bravery and commitment to his community.
Governor Ron DeSantis has issued a directive for flags in Charlotte County to be flown at half-staff on Friday, December 20, 2024. "As a mark of respect," Governor DeSantis stated, "I hereby direct the flags of the United States and the State of Florida to be flown at half-staff."
