Miami leads US metro areas in job growth for November

FloridaCommerce has reported that the Miami metro area led all metropolitan regions in private sector job growth for November 2024, adding 21,700 jobs, a 1.8% increase over the year. The construction industry contributed significantly with an addition of 6,100 jobs, while professional and business services saw an increase of 4,500 jobs.

The unemployment rate in Miami rose to 2.4% in November from 1.5% a year earlier. The labor force experienced a decrease of 2.4%, equating to a reduction of approximately 33,717 individuals.

Statewide, Florida added 60,100 private sector jobs in November, exceeding pre-hurricane employment levels and reflecting recovery efforts following Hurricanes Debby, Helene, and Milton. For nearly four years now—49 consecutive months—Florida's unemployment rate has remained below the national average.

As of November 2024, Florida's private sector employment was up by 25,100 jobs compared to September before Hurricanes Helene and Milton hit. Over the past three months leading up to November, the state averaged monthly gains of about 8,733 private sector jobs.

J. Alex Kelly, Florida Secretary of Commerce stated: “Under Governor DeSantis’ decisive leadership, Florida’s quick bounce-back is evidence of Florida’s commitment to recovery.” He credited efforts such as reopening infrastructure and restoring utilities for helping businesses remain operational post-storms.

In terms of industry-specific growth for November 2024 alone, leisure and hospitality gained the most with an increase of 30,500 jobs or a rise of 2.3%. This sector regained more positions than it lost during October.

The state's overall unemployment rate stood at 3.4%, slightly higher than October but still below the national average which was recorded at 4.2%.

Since August this year following hurricane impacts on businesses across Florida; more than $88 million has been approved through the Small Business Emergency Bridge Loan Program benefiting over two thousand small enterprises ensuring continued employment opportunities within affected communities.
