The recreational fishing season for red grouper and lane snapper will commence in Gulf state waters on January 1. Anglers intending to fish for red grouper from private recreational vessels in both state and federal waters are required to obtain the State Reef Fish Angler Designation, which needs to be renewed annually.
This designation makes anglers eligible to participate in the State Reef Fish Survey by receiving a mail survey. The data collected through this survey contributes to enhancing recreational fishing opportunities in Florida. More information about the State Reef Fish Survey can be found at MyFWC.com/SRFS.
To stay informed about current regulations for red grouper, anglers can visit MyFWC.com/Marine, navigate to “Recreational Regulations,” select “Reef Fish,” and then choose “Grouper.” For lane snapper regulations, the same website provides guidance under “Snapper” instead of “Grouper.”
Additionally, fishermen can download the Fish Rules App for real-time updates on fishing regulations while out on the water.
