New fishing pier opens in Lake City honoring WWII veteran

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) celebrated the grand opening of the new Harter Pier at Lake Montgomery Fish Management Area on January 10. The pier is dedicated to Retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Al Harter, a World War II veteran, providing a venue for fishing, family gatherings, and enjoying Lake Montgomery's scenery.

The ceremony included a ribbon-cutting and a first cast from the pier, marking its official inauguration. Local leaders and project partners expressed enthusiasm for the pier and emphasized the collaborative efforts involved in its creation. The Harter family received special recognition for their community support.

Partners contributing to the Harter Pier include FWC, Harter Family Trust, City of Lake City, Columbia County, North Florida Professional Services, Columbia County Tourist Development Council, Fish & Wildlife Foundation of Florida, among others.

Chris Wynn, Regional Director of FWC’s North Central Region stated: “We are honored to open the new Harter Pier in memory of Lt. Col. Al Harter, a true hero who dedicated his life to serving others.” He added that the pier is "a lasting tribute to his legacy and will provide a wonderful space for fishing and recreation for years to come."
