Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association honors top industry leaders at annual gala

The Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association (FRLA) recently held its annual gala at the Sunseeker Resort in Charlotte Harbor, Florida. The event celebrated the 2024 Hospitality Stars of the Industry Hall of Fame winners and introduced the 2025 FRLA Board Executive Committee, including new Chairman Nick Sarra from Destin.

Carol Dover, President and CEO of FRLA, expressed pride in recognizing industry leaders: “Recognizing the exceptional achievements of our Hospitality Stars of the Industry is a true honor,” she said. “The FRLA Hall of Fame celebrates distinguished leaders whose legacies have left an enduring mark on Florida’s vibrant hospitality landscape.”

Among those honored was Don Fox, who received a Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to Firehouse Subs and other roles in the restaurant industry. His career includes leadership positions at Burger King Corporation and Firehouse Subs, where he served as President and CEO until his retirement in early 2024.

Topher Jensen from Gas South was named Supplier of the Year. Jensen has been with Gas South since 2020 after a merger with Infinite Energy, where he had various roles over ten years. He is active in FRLA’s Northeast Chapter and chairs its state Marketing & Allied Member Council.

Horace Dawson was recognized as Restaurateur of the Year following his retirement as CEO of Red Lobster. His previous experience includes executive roles at Darden Restaurants and Hard Rock Café International.

Diane Schmidt received recognition as Hotelier of the Year for her extensive career in hospitality management, particularly her work with Ocean Properties in Key West. She has also contributed significantly to community service through her involvement with several boards.

FRLA serves as Florida's leading non-profit trade association for the hospitality industry. Founded in 1946, it represents more than 10,000 members across various sectors within hospitality. The association focuses on advocacy, regulatory compliance training, and educational programs to support Florida's $112 billion hospitality industry.
