Florida board approves revised college course list

The State Board of Education in Florida has approved a new list of general education courses for the state's 28 colleges. This marks the first time that all state colleges and universities in Florida were required to submit their general education courses for review, ensuring they comply with state statutes. The aim is to provide students with high-quality foundational knowledge that prepares them for lifelong learning.

Commissioner of Education Manny Diaz, Jr. emphasized the importance of these courses, stating, "General education courses should be high-quality courses that provide foundational knowledge." He credited Governor DeSantis' leadership for ensuring these courses help students develop critical thinking skills before advancing to their major-specific studies.

This approval follows legislation passed last year through SB 266, which aims to ensure students at public institutions receive an education that equips them with necessary skills for citizenship and success in the job market. The newly approved course list reduces the number of general education offerings by 57 percent, focusing on statutory requirements and improving course transferability within state universities.

Additionally, the State Board has sanctioned two new baccalaureate degree programs at St. Johns River State College—one in biological science and another in human services. These programs are designed to meet local workforce demands and bolster Florida's reputation as a leader in workforce education.
