FloridaCommerce has reported a gain of 8,500 private sector jobs in the Fort Lauderdale area over the year ending December 2024. This increase represents a 1.0% rise in employment, with the total number of private sector jobs reaching 835,200 during this period.
The region saw significant job gains in government and other services sectors, adding 4,500 and 3,000 jobs respectively. Despite these gains, the unemployment rate rose slightly to 2.9%, up from 2.8% in December 2023. The labor force also experienced a decrease of 0.7%, equating to a reduction of approximately 7,650 individuals.
Statewide, Florida's private employment increased by 17,900 jobs from November to December 2024. Since Hurricanes Debby, Helene, and Milton impacted the state earlier that year, Florida employers have added a combined total of more than 64,700 jobs.
Florida Secretary of Commerce J. Alex Kelly credited Governor DeSantis' leadership for these developments: “Under Governor DeSantis’ decisive leadership, Florida continues to make gains for job seekers and job creators.” He highlighted policies like E-Verify as factors contributing to growth in tourism-related employment.
Since May 2023 when SB1718 was signed into law by Governor DeSantis, the leisure and hospitality industry reached an all-time high with an increase of over 29,500 jobs compared to one year ago.
Job seekers are encouraged to utilize resources such as Employ Florida and CareerSource Florida’s network for assistance with career counseling and job placement support. Additionally available is Apprentice Florida which aims at expanding apprenticeship programs across the state alongside Veterans Florida assisting military veterans transitioning into civilian roles.
