The Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) has designated February 3-7, 2025, as Florida Severe Weather Awareness Week. This annual event coincides with the peak severe weather season in Florida and aims to educate residents and visitors about potential weather hazards.
"Severe Weather Awareness Week is a great reminder that Florida’s weather can be unpredictable, making preparedness essential," said FDEM Executive Director Kevin Guthrie. "From hurricanes and tornadoes to thunderstorms and flooding, severe weather can strike at any time. Having a plan, staying informed and knowing how to respond are key to staying safe."
Throughout the week, each day will focus on different severe weather types:
- Monday, February 3: Lightning
- Tuesday, February 4: Marine Hazards and Rip Currents
- Wednesday, February 5: Thunderstorms and Tornadoes
- Thursday, February 6: Hurricanes and Flooding
- Friday, February 7: Temperature Extremes and Wildfires
A statewide tornado drill is scheduled for Wednesday, February 5 at approximately 10 a.m. EST/9 a.m. CST. If severe weather is forecasted for that day, the drill will be moved to Friday, February 7 at the same time. Educational institutions such as school districts, private schools, preschools, and daycare centers are encouraged to take part in this exercise.
Additionally, FDEM's video series "Meteorology Minute" features insights from four leading meteorologists on various types of weather phenomena experienced in Florida. This initiative seeks to enhance understanding of weather hazards and preparedness strategies across the state.
