FloridaCommerce has allocated over $858,000 to aid long-term recovery efforts following Hurricane Ian. The funding supports seven projects across four communities through the Rebuild Florida Hurricane Ian Hazard Mitigation Grant Match Program (HMGMP). These funds are designated for local governments eligible for the FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant Program, which requires a 25 percent local match. The initiative aims to build and enhance critical infrastructure in areas affected by the hurricane.
"Under Governor Ron DeSantis’ decisive leadership, FloridaCommerce has remained committed to supporting communities as they continue to rebuild from Hurricane Ian," stated Secretary of Commerce J. Alex Kelly. "These awards will help communities implement infrastructure protection measurements, stormwater management improvements and other mitigation projects to build resiliency against future storms."
The awarded communities include Charlotte County with $87,071 for installing a permanent generator in a critical facility; Seminole County receiving $621,655 for stormwater management improvements and relocating two hazard-prone structures; Lake County School Board with $21,924 for installing a permanent generator in a critical facility; and the City of Wauchula with $127,821 for installing generators in two critical facilities.
In previous rounds of HMGMP awards, more than $3.7 million was distributed through 31 projects aimed at long-term recovery from Hurricane Ian. Funding is provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Community Development Block Grant – Disaster Recovery Program.
