The Florida Ports Council is actively building momentum in maritime operations, focusing on international partnerships and legislative engagement. Florida's network of seaports plays a crucial role in supplying essential commodities such as food, fuel, and healthcare supplies, not only to Floridians but also to the Caribbean. This initiative ensures a resilient supply chain.
A recent key development involves a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Italian partner ports. This agreement, stemming from Governor Ron DeSantis' Trade Mission to Italy last November, enhances cooperation in trade, logistics, and workforce development. "From trade and connectivity prospects to smart port development and technology exchange, with this MOU agreement, the opportunities between our regions will no doubt generate truly remarkable successes," stated Florida Department of Transportation Secretary Jared W. Perdue.
The MOU was formalized at the Seatrade Cruise Global 2025 event in Miami, with notable figures such as FDOT Secretary Perdue, Port Tampa Bay’s Raul Alfonso, PortMiami Port Director Hydi Webb, Port Everglades Port Director Joseph Morris, and Port St. Pete Port Director David Wirth in attendance. Representatives from SeaPort Manatee, Port Canaveral, JAXPORT, Assoporti, and Assologistica also participated.
Recently, Florida port officials convened in Tallahassee for legislative discussions and the Florida Seaport Transportation and Economic Development (FSTED) board meeting. Appreciation was extended to sponsors, including HNTB, Florida Natural Gas Association, TECO, Lewis Longman Walker, Exodigo, and FLCLASS.
Looking ahead, Florida's port leaders plan to visit Washington, D.C., to engage with Florida's Congressional Delegation. They aim to discuss transportation and infrastructure priorities, especially in meetings with newly elected Congressman Jimmy Patronis, now serving on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, overseeing the maritime sector.
These efforts underscore Florida's commitment to maintaining efficient seaport operations and securing critical commodity flows into the state. The support of state and national leaders remains vital to continuing these efforts.
