Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, in collaboration with PortMiami and the Miami-Dade Innovation Authority (MDIA), has announced the winners of MDIA’s third Public Innovation Challenge. The challenge focuses on improving cargo visibility at PortMiami.
The selected pilot projects integrate artificial intelligence, computer vision, and advanced analytics to enhance cargo tracking, terminal operations, and manage roadway congestion. Each project is funded with $100,000 from MDIA and aims to demonstrate how emerging technologies can assist public sector leaders by providing actionable data for operational efficiency, safety outcomes, and environmental performance. This initiative highlights Miami-Dade County's commitment to leveraging public-private partnerships like those with MDIA to modernize public infrastructure.
Mayor Daniella Levine Cava stated: “Introducing real-time cargo tracking at PortMiami through this innovative pilot is a strategic leap toward our vision of becoming the premier trade hub of the Americas. This challenge reflects our ongoing commitment to investing in smart, future-ready infrastructure—boosting efficiency, enhancing global competitiveness, creating local jobs, and delivering even better service to our partners and customers.”
Among the winners are GenLogs, which will supply data on cargo movement across the state and country; Conbo.ai, offering insights into truck movements at the port; GridMatrix focusing on roadway safety and congestion; and Argu Eye Ltd monitoring container movements for enhanced safety analysis.
A joint pilot project between Port of Miami Terminal Operating Company (POMTOC) and Conbo.ai will focus on improving terminal operations by analyzing truck and equipment movement data within the terminal.
Leigh-Ann A. Buchanan, President and CEO of MDIA remarked: “This challenge exemplifies how the government can catalyze innovation by making it easier for emerging technologies to prove their impact in the real world. By partnering with PortMiami—one of our region’s most vital economic engines—we’re not only improving operational efficiency but also demonstrating a scalable model for how public infrastructure can drive private sector innovation."
The Public Innovation Challenge by MDIA aims to bridge gaps between startups' innovations and public sector needs through fostering partnerships that benefit communities directly. These pilot projects position Miami-Dade County as a leader in adopting advanced technologies to address complex logistical issues.
PortMiami Director and CEO Hydi Webb added: “Innovation in cargo visibility is reaching an inflection point with new technologies allowing for real-time tracking of trucks and containers, efficiency metric reports, and advanced data analytics. With MDIA’s Public Innovation Challenge, PortMiami aims to be at the forefront of these ‘smart port’ technologies.”
