Chrissy Hartley, a dedicated member of the Emerald Coast Association of Realtors (ECAR), has been instrumental in raising funds and awareness for veterans through her involvement with Building Homes for Heroes. Over the past eight years, Hartley has focused on enhancing local efforts to support veterans in need. In recognition of her work, she was named Florida Realtors' Humanitarian of the Year in 2024.
Initially, ECAR's outreach efforts were limited. "It was very lackluster," Hartley said. "I wasn’t okay with this; $3,000 is just not enough for me." Motivated to improve these efforts, she transitioned from organizing a volleyball tournament to a more inclusive bowling tournament. "Bowling opens it up to all skill levels and ensures that weather won’t deter us," she explained.
This shift led to an increase in participation and donations, with over $38,000 raised this year alone. The funds directly aid in building and modifying homes for veterans. Additionally, anonymous donations have doubled the impact of the fundraising.
As chair of the Building Homes for Heroes Committee, Hartley emphasizes the importance of community awareness about veterans' needs. “It’s crucial for people to understand there is a need out there,” she stated. Her advocacy has inspired greater community involvement from local businesses and individuals.
Hartley's commitment extends beyond Building Homes for Heroes as she also supports Food for Thought—a charity providing meals to students—and serves as PTO president at her children's school. Inspired by her mother's emphasis on community service during her upbringing, Hartley believes realtors have a unique opportunity to connect with and serve their communities.
“Realtors have a unique reach in the community,” Hartley noted. “We can connect with anyone and everyone.” Her dedication is not only about raising funds but also about building connections that make a lasting difference.
