Recreational and commercial blue crab traps can be placed back in the coastal waters from Hernando to Wakulla counties starting July 26. The closure affected state waters within three nautical miles from shore, including all waters of the Ochlockonee River and Ochlockonee Bay.
Lost and abandoned blue crab traps pose a problem as they can continue trapping crabs and fish when left in the water. They also damage sensitive habitats and pose navigational hazards.
This closure is the last of three regional, 10-day closures for blue crab traps in 2025. There are six regional closures: three on the east coast during even-numbered years and three on the west coast during odd-numbered years.
