The Florida Department of Health has announced preparations for special needs shelter operations as Tropical Depression Four approaches areas expected to be affected. The department is urging individuals with disabilities or medical conditions requiring assistance, but not hospitalization, to pre-register with the Florida Special Needs Shelter Registry.
According to the department, "Registering through the Florida Special Needs Registry allows local emergency management officials to provide important information and quickly assist you during an emergency. For more information, contact your county’s emergency management office or visit the Florida Special Needs Registry."
Those eligible for special needs shelters are advised to bring a kit containing a list of medications and dosages, a 30-day supply of medications, essential medical equipment (including backup energy sources if needed), any special dietary foods, and personal information such as photo ID, insurance card, emergency contacts, and primary care provider details.
After registration with the Florida Special Needs Registry is complete, local emergency management agencies will provide additional information about evacuation and sheltering options. The public can check current shelter status by visiting https://www.floridadisaster.org/.
Health care providers are encouraged to email SNR@flhealth.gov to obtain access credentials for the registry so they can use all available provider functions.
The Florida Department of Health is accredited by the Public Health Accreditation Board and aims to protect and improve health statewide through coordinated efforts at various levels.
