The Florida Department of Health has announced preparations for special needs shelter operations as Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine approaches areas where landfall is expected.
Officials are urging residents who may require assistance during emergencies to register with the Florida Special Needs Registry. According to the department, registering helps local emergency management officials provide important information and respond quickly in times of crisis. Residents can contact their county’s emergency management office or visit the Florida Special Needs Registry online for more details.
Those eligible for special needs shelters are advised to bring a kit that includes a list of medications and dosages, a 30-day supply of medications, vital medical equipment—especially for those dependent on electricity or oxygen—and backup energy sources. The kit should also contain any special dietary foods, personal identification such as photo ID and insurance card, a list of emergency contacts, and primary care provider contact information.
After completing registration with the Florida Special Needs Registry, local emergency management agencies will provide additional details about evacuation procedures and available sheltering options.
Information about local shelter status can be found at https://www.floridadisaster.org/.
Health care providers seeking access to the registry are instructed to email SNR@flhealth.gov to obtain login credentials and use all available health care provider functions.
