Tampa area sees significant job growth in April; unemployment rate rises slightly

FloridaCommerce has released the employment data for April 2025, revealing that the Tampa metro area saw an increase of 10,300 jobs in the private sector over the year. This growth represents a 0.7% rise and places Tampa as the third-highest among all metro areas in terms of job additions. The labor force in Tampa also grew by 4,715, marking a 0.3% increase.

The industry with the most significant job gains was education and health services, which added 5,100 positions. However, the unemployment rate in Tampa rose to 3.5%, up from 3.0% in April 2024.

Statewide, Florida’s private sector employment increased by 21,800 jobs from March to April 2025. The state’s economy is valued at $1.7 trillion and has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as having the top-ranked economy nationwide for two consecutive years.

Since May 2020, Florida employers have consistently added jobs for most months, contributing to a total private employment increase of 125,700 jobs over the past year until April 2025. Notably, Florida’s unemployment rate has remained below the national average since November 2020.

In addition to these statistics, Florida leads in several economic indicators: it ranks first in higher education for nine years running and second overall in education across states. Furthermore, tourism remains robust with a record-setting number of visitors during Q4.
