FloridaCommerce has reported that the Tampa metro area achieved significant job growth, securing the third-highest number of private sector jobs among all metro areas over the year in January 2025. The area’s private sector employment rose by 11,400 jobs, marking a 0.8% increase. Education and health services were noted as the sectors with the most job gains, adding 6,300 positions.
The labor force in Tampa increased by 19,246 people, representing a 1.2% rise compared to the previous year. However, the unemployment rate climbed to 3.8%, up from 3.4% in January 2024.
Governor Ron DeSantis highlighted Florida’s economic resilience with a labor force exceeding 11.1 million as of January 2025. Job growth was observed across various major industries, including manufacturing which reached 430,800 jobs.
Revised data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates an upward revision of Florida’s labor force by 162,000 workers, suggesting consistent growth or stability in ten out of the last twelve months.
Overall, Florida added 113,600 jobs over the year with a job growth rate of 1.3%, surpassing the national average of 1.2%. Since May 2020, employers have expanded their workforce for most months during this period.
In addition to education and health services gaining prominence with an increase of 7,200 jobs from December to January (+0.5%), leisure and hospitality also saw significant gains with an addition of 6,100 jobs (+0.5%).
