Florida Realtors has highlighted several backyarding trends for 2025, as identified by the TurfMutt Foundation. The focus on urban backyarding is expected to grow due to a shift back to city centers as in-person workspaces become more prevalent. This will increase the importance of optimizing small urban spaces such as balconies and patio gardens, alongside an enhanced interest in “public backyarding” spaces like neighborhood parks and community gardens.

Investments in green space by cities are likely to attract more residents. Such investments have shown to improve resident happiness, make cities more livable, and benefit environmental conditions. Louisville exemplifies this trend with initiatives like Mulligan’s Bark Park and The TurfMutt Foundation Great Lawn located downtown.

The need for outdoor activity areas that cater to all age groups is rising due to an increase in multi-generational households. These households are growing partly because of high homeownership costs, necessitating pooled resources for housing. Backyards are being redesigned to offer flexible zones for various activities.

Backyards are also transforming into wellness retreats as mental health awareness grows. People aim to create calming environments at home and in local parks, encouraging a lifestyle less dependent on technology and more connected with nature.

With over 66% of American households owning pets, pet-friendly backyard spaces are becoming more elaborate. This includes features like water fountains and agility courses. Communities with amenities such as dog parks and pet-friendly facilities are increasingly sought after by pet owners.
