Miami leads U.S metro areas in private sector job gains for July

FloridaCommerce has announced that the Miami metro area gained the most private sector jobs among all metro areas over the year in July 2024. The region saw an increase of 35,400 jobs, marking a 3.1% rise.

The leading sectors contributing to this growth include education and health services with an addition of 9,300 jobs; leisure and hospitality with 7,200 jobs; professional and business services with 7,100 jobs; and construction with 6,400 jobs.

The labor force in the Miami area grew by 0.9%, equating to an increase of 11,914 individuals over the year in July 2024. The unemployment rate for the region stood at 3.1%, which is a rise of 1.2 percentage points from last year's rate of 1.9%.

Statewide, Florida's unemployment rate remains lower than the national average at 3.3% in July 2024, compared to the national rate of 4.3%. Florida's private sector employment has expanded by 201,500 jobs or a growth rate of 2.3% since July 2023, surpassing the national growth rate of 1.5%.

In July alone, Florida’s leisure and hospitality sector added the most jobs among major industries with an increase of 11,200 positions (a monthly rise of +0.9%), followed by construction which saw an addition of 6,300 jobs (+1.0%). Over the same period since last year, Florida's labor force increased by approximately 35,000 people (+0.3%).

"Job creators continue to demonstrate great confidence in Florida through their investments," stated a spokesperson from FloridaCommerce.

Data indicates numerous job opportunities remain available across Florida with more than 433,000 positions posted online as of July.
