Jacksonville sees rise in private sector employment with over 15K new jobs in July

FloridaCommerce announced today that the Jacksonville area’s total private sector employment increased by 15,500 jobs (+2.2%) over the year in July 2024. The Jacksonville Metro Area’s labor force saw a modest increase of 1,972 (+0.2%) during the same period.

The unemployment rate in the Jacksonville area was recorded at 3.8% in July 2024, up by 0.5 percentage points from July 2023's rate of 3.3%. The education and health services industry sector experienced the highest job growth, adding 5,100 jobs since July 2023.

Statewide, Florida's unemployment rate remained lower than the national average at 3.3% in July 2024, compared to the national rate of 4.3%. Over the past year, Florida’s private sector employment has grown by 201,500 jobs (+2.3%), outpacing the national growth rate of 1.5%.

In terms of industry-specific gains for July 2024, the leisure and hospitality sector led with an addition of 11,200 jobs (+0.9%) from the previous month, followed by construction which added 6,300 jobs (+1.0%). The state’s labor force grew by approximately 35,000 (+0.3%) over the year since July 2023.
