DeSantis expands state of emergency as Tropical Storm Milton strengthens

Governor Ron DeSantis has issued Executive Order 24-215, amending a previous order to increase the number of Florida counties under a state of emergency due to Tropical Storm Milton. The new order raises the count from 35 to 51 counties.

The decision follows the forecast that Tropical Storm Milton will intensify significantly over the next three days as it moves across the Gulf of Mexico. It is expected to approach or reach major hurricane status upon landfall on Florida's west coast, posing threats such as life-threatening storm surges and severe wind gusts.

Governor DeSantis stated, "As Governor of Florida, I am responsible to meet the dangers presented to the State of Florida and its people by this emergency."

The amended executive order aims to ensure continued support for recovery efforts in affected areas. The governor emphasized that an amendment was necessary due to the projected conditions constituting a major disaster.

The executive order is effective immediately and will remain in effect until Executive Order 24-214 expires.
