DeSantis expands state of emergency as Hurricane Milton approaches Florida

Governor Ron DeSantis has issued an executive order to expand the state of emergency in Florida, as Tropical Storm Milton approaches. The decision, outlined in Executive Order 24-215, increases the number of counties under a state of emergency from 35 to 51.

This action comes as Tropical Storm Milton continues to intensify. "On October 6, 2024, Tropical Storm Milton continues to strengthen," said DeSantis. The storm is expected to become a major hurricane within the next three days as it moves across the Gulf of Mexico.

The governor expressed concerns over the potential impact on Florida's west coast, highlighting possible catastrophic effects such as life-threatening storm surges and severe wind gusts. The expansion of the state of emergency aims to bolster recovery efforts and provide continued support for those affected by the disaster.

DeSantis emphasized his responsibility in addressing these dangers: "As Governor of Florida, I am responsible to meet the dangers presented to the State of Florida and its people by this emergency."

Executive Order 24-214 has been amended accordingly. "Section 1 of Executive Order 24-214 is amended," declared DeSantis. The amendment now includes additional counties such as Brevard, Broward, Collier, and Palm Beach among others.

The executive order takes immediate effect and will remain active until Executive Order 24-214 expires.
