Florida health official awarded Champion for the Elderly Award

The Florida Health Care Association (FHCA) has honored Deputy Secretary Kim Smoak of the Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) with the 2024 Champion for the Elderly Award. The award was presented during a joint training session for skilled nursing facilities in Tallahassee.

"Deputy Secretary Smoak is the epitome of a Champion for the Elderly and more than deserving of this honor," said Emmett Reed, CEO of FHCA. "She has dedicated her career to ensuring Florida’s aging population receives the highest quality of care."

Smoak's role as Deputy Secretary involves overseeing licenses, certifications, and regulations for various healthcare providers. Her efforts are particularly noted during emergencies like Hurricanes Helene and Milton, where she coordinates state resources to assist healthcare partners.

The award recognizes individuals who advocate for enhanced care in long-term care centers. Over 200 providers and AHCA surveyors attended the event to witness Smoak receive this recognition.

In addition to her responsibilities at AHCA, Smoak is actively involved in emergency preparedness and serves as a keynote speaker at FHCA events. She also holds positions such as State Survey Agency Director and is recognized by federal agencies for her contributions.

Smoak's academic background includes a Master of Science in Health with an emphasis on Aging Studies, alongside qualifications as an Intellectual Disability Professional.
