SPLC responds to court's dismissal of Caicedo v. DeSantis case

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) has expressed disappointment over the dismissal of the case Caicedo, et al. v. DeSantis, describing it as a "temporary setback for democracy." Matletha Bennette, senior staff attorney for Democracy: Voting Rights at SPLC, stated that this decision highlights the challenges Floridians face in protecting voting rights. She emphasized that the suspension of Monique Worrell was seen as a politically motivated action intended to undermine voter intent.

Plaintiff David Caicedo voiced his disappointment but noted that Worrell's recent electoral victory provided some consolation. "I defiantly and proudly voted again for Monique Worrell as I did the first time and will do it again the next time," Caicedo said.

Rajib Chowdhury, a resident, raised concerns about potential future actions by Governor DeSantis, questioning what might prevent him from negating votes in upcoming elections. He asserted that their community deserves to have its voices heard and respected.

Despite the unfavorable outcome, Bennette reaffirmed SPLC's commitment to defending democratic principles and celebrated with Floridians who re-elected Ms. Worrell as state attorney in Orange-Osceola counties.
