Today, on Veterans Day, Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Nuñez announced the second annual 'Holiday Letters to Heroes' initiative. This program encourages Florida's K–8 students to write holiday letters to military personnel deployed or on state active duty in the Florida National Guard and Florida State Guard. The initiative is part of LG on Mission and is in collaboration with the Florida Department of Education. The letters will be collected from November 11 through December 11, 2024.
Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Nuñez stated, "The men and women in the Florida National Guard and Florida State Guard courageously serve our state every day, sacrificing time away from their families and loved ones, even during the holidays." She highlighted their efforts during hurricanes Debby, Helene, and Milton this year. Nuñez expressed hope that the students' letters would spread holiday cheer and show gratitude.
Major General John D. Haas remarked, "The Florida National Guard is tremendously proud to support the citizens of Florida." He noted that tokens of gratitude like student letters are appreciated by service members.
Florida State Guard Executive Director Mark Thieme commented on the commitment and sacrifice of veteran soldiers who have served both nationally and within the state guard. He said he is humbled to serve alongside these veterans.
Commissioner of Education Manny Diaz Jr. encouraged students to send letters thanking service members for their efforts following recent hurricanes. Each student will submit a handwritten letter with a message of support and appreciation for active duty military personnel.
All letters should be addressed to:
ATTN: Holiday Letters to Heroes
325 W Gaines Street
Tallahassee, Florida 32399
They must be received by December 11, 2024.
Under Governor DeSantis' leadership, significant funding has been allocated to support military readiness in Florida. The state's budget has increased resources for both the National Guard and State Guard.
