EPA awards $1.8M grant for emission studies at Port Tampa Bay

Port Tampa Bay is set to receive $1.8 million in grant funding from the U.S. Department of Environmental Quality’s Clean Ports Program. The funds will be used to study an emissions reduction strategy for port infrastructure, aiming to support a transition to zero-emission operations over time.

The port plans to utilize the grant to develop a baseline air emissions inventory, which will inform their emissions reduction strategy. Additionally, they will engage with both port and community stakeholders on long-term planning. The feasibility study will explore renewable energy technologies such as electric, battery-electric, hydrogen fuel cell, and green fuel options. This comprehensive study will include goals and objectives, tracking and reporting mechanisms, technology deployment strategies, infrastructure upgrades, renewable energy procurement plans, stakeholder engagement processes, and funding strategies.

Paul Anderson, President & CEO of Port Tampa Bay stated: “Port Tampa Bay is proud of our environmental record and accomplishments. This funding will allow us to establish a roadmap for electrification and decarbonization of the port in partnership with our cruise line partners and cargo terminal operators.” He further noted that their diverse lines of business present numerous opportunities to electrify operations and reduce emissions in alignment with maritime trends and best practices.

U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor expressed her support by saying: “I was proud to champion Port Tampa Bay’s vision for Clean Ports Climate and Air Quality Planning.” She emphasized that the federal support made possible by the Inflation Reduction Act would facilitate new electric infrastructure installation and replace outdated equipment to enhance efficiency while supporting the shift towards zero emissions.

The total cost for this project amounts to $2 million. Of this amount, $1.8 million is provided by the Environmental Protection Agency while Port Tampa Bay has secured $200,000 in local funding.
