The recent Florida Citrus Commission meeting, held on October 23, focused extensively on scientific research relevant to the citrus industry. Peter Chaires, Executive Director of New Varieties Development and Management Corp. (NVDMC), presented the projects for 2024-25. His presentation highlighted new variety developments and priorities at both UF IFAS and USDA-ARS.
Steve Johnson, Chairman of the Florida Citrus Commission, emphasized the importance of these scientific advancements in addressing challenges such as greening disease. "When I hear about the latest scientific research that will aid us in the war against greening and, honestly, any topic that will better the industry, my attention is piqued," he stated.
Growers are encouraged to attend upcoming Displays or Field Days sponsored by NVDMC to observe these developments firsthand. The recent Grower Information Meeting hosted by Florida Citrus Mutual provided updates on OTC effects from Dr. Ute Albrecht of UF IFAS SWFREC. Her findings from four trials indicated improvements in yield, fruit quality, and juice quality.
Steven Hall from CRAFT Foundation Inc. discussed CRAFT Cycle Six and its application process during this meeting. The deadline for new plantings applications is November 15.
Johnson noted that despite current challenges facing Florida citrus growers, there are reasons for optimism due to shared goals between scientists and growers: "While it’s certainly a difficult time to be a Florida citrus grower, one could reasonably argue that there are many reasons to be encouraged."
Steve Johnson serves as Chairman of the Florida Citrus Commission and is also the owner and general manager of Johnson Harvesting, Inc., based in Wauchula, FL.
