Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and Uber have announced a nationwide campaign to encourage riders to support impaired driving prevention by donating through the Uber app. The announcement was made on the MADD website on December 17, during Impaired Driving Prevention Month.
According to the MADD website, from December 17, 2024, to January 3, 2025, riders across the nation can donate to MADD through the Uber app. Uber will match the first $250,000 in contributions. The proceeds will support MADD’s programs, which include prevention education, advocacy for stronger impaired driving laws, and victim services.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that the holiday season is one of the most dangerous times for drivers in the United States. Between 2018 and 2022, drunk driving resulted in 4,759 fatalities during December. In December 2022 alone, there were 1,062 alcohol-related crash fatalities, with many incidents occurring at night.
A study by the National Bureau of Economic Research indicates that ridesharing services have reduced alcohol-related traffic fatalities in the U.S. by 6.1% and overall traffic fatalities by 4.0%. The research analyzed Uber’s proprietary data and found significant reductions during nighttime hours and weekends.
According to The History Channel, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is a non-profit organization founded in 1980 by Candy Lightner after her daughter Cari was killed by a drunk driver. MADD's mission is to stop drunk driving, support victims of this crime, and prevent underage drinking.
