Southern Poverty Law Center questions Pam Bondi’s civil rights record

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) has expressed concerns about Pam Bondi's suitability for the role of attorney general, citing her record on civil rights. Margaret Huang, president and CEO of SPLC, emphasized the importance of a strong Department of Justice to protect constitutional rights and called for leaders committed to law enforcement free from political influence.

Huang stated, "We need an attorney general with a track record of aggressively and affirmatively enforcing civil rights laws. An attorney general must be a public servant with a demonstrated commitment to truth and justice and, at the very least, must believe in the mission of the agency they are chosen to lead." She criticized Bondi's history as Florida's attorney general for defending restrictive voting laws and promoting false narratives regarding voter fraud.

Bondi has been noted for her stance on several issues post-office. This includes claims related to the 2020 presidential election outcome. The SPLC pointed out that she declared President-elect Trump won Pennsylvania incorrectly and accused DOJ investigators of being part of a "deep state" during media appearances.

The SPLC urged careful consideration by the Senate Judiciary Committee regarding Bondi’s confirmation. Huang concluded by urging that only candidates who uphold equality and justice should be confirmed: “We urge the Senate Judiciary Committee to closely examine Pam Bondi's record on civil rights and to only confirm an attorney general who will ensure that our nation lives up to its promise of equality and justice for all.”
