The Florida Department of Education and Volunteer Florida have announced the 2025 Black History Month student art and essay contests, themed "Honoring African American Contributions to Florida’s Success." The initiative encourages students across the state to participate in February, a month dedicated to recognizing Black history in the United States.
Commissioner of Education Manny Diaz, Jr. emphasized the importance of educating students about African American history. “Florida is committed to teaching students about African American history and the role African Americans have played in Florida’s success,” he stated.
Volunteer Florida CEO Josie Tamayo highlighted the state's dedication to acknowledging African American contributions. "Florida goes the extra mile to recognize the immense and historical contributions of African Americans in our great state," she said.
The contests are open to all Florida students, with different categories for various grade levels. Students in grades K-3 can enter an art contest, while those in grades 4-12 are eligible for an essay contest. Additionally, educators can be nominated for the Black History Month Excellence in Education Award.
For kindergarten through third-grade participants, the art contest requires original two-dimensional artwork reflecting this year's theme. Four winners will receive a $100 gift card for school supplies and a one-year pass to Florida State Parks.
The essay contest invites students from fourth through twelfth grade attending any type of school in Florida to submit essays up to 500 words long about impactful African Americans from Florida's history. Six winners will receive a two-year Florida College Plan scholarship provided by the Florida Prepaid College Foundation along with a $100 gift card for school supplies.
Governor Ron DeSantis and First Lady Casey DeSantis’ Black History Month Excellence in Education Award is available for full-time educators at elementary, middle, or high schools throughout Florida. Nominations can be submitted by principals, teachers, parents/guardians, or students. Winners will receive $2,500 from Volunteer Florida.
Entries must be sent to Volunteer Florida or submitted online by February 3, 2025. More details can be found on www.floridablackhistory.com.
