Foundation supports Indiana's new Medicaid reform initiative

The Foundation for Government Accountability (FGA) has expressed approval for Indiana State Senator Ryan Mishler's efforts in introducing legislation aimed at reforming the state's Medicaid system. The proposed bill is part of Governor-elect Mike Braun’s Freedom and Opportunity agenda, which seeks to enhance efficiency and reduce costs within the Medicaid program.

Following a federal court decision that invalidated significant aspects of the Healthy Indiana Plan last year, this new legislative effort aims to maintain support for those in need while promoting self-reliance among able-bodied residents and safeguarding taxpayer funds.

Jonathan Bechtle, Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel at FGA, commented on the initiative: “Indiana’s Medicaid program is facing some big budget and legal challenges. I applaud the Senate for demonstrating bold leadership by introducing comprehensive Medicaid reform right out of the gate this session.” He further praised Senator Mishler's consistent advocacy for Medicaid reform alongside Governor-elect Braun's commitment to prioritizing this issue.

Bechtle added, “This bill will establish Indiana as a leader in right-sizing the Medicaid program, will prioritize the truly needy, and advances one of our country’s most basic and fundamental pillars: belief in the life-changing power of work.” He emphasized that Senate Bill 2 signifies a strong message from state lawmakers about their dedication to ensuring a robust and sustainable Medicaid program focused on assisting those in need.
