FloridaCommerce has reported a rise in Florida's private employment, with an increase of 17,900 jobs in December 2024. This marks a continuation of the state's recovery and growth following the impacts of Hurricanes Debby, Helene, and Milton. Over the year, Florida's private sector employment grew by 122,800 jobs or 1.4%, surpassing the national growth rate of 1.3%.
The statewide unemployment rate remained steady at 3.4% for December, maintaining its position below the national average of 4.1%. "Under Governor DeSantis’ decisive leadership, Florida continues to make gains for job seekers and job creators," stated J. Alex Kelly, Florida Secretary of Commerce.
Since May 2023 when SB 1718 was signed into law by Governor DeSantis, the leisure and hospitality industry reached a record high with an increase of 29,500 jobs over one year. In December alone, this sector added another 3,100 jobs.
Florida has consistently outperformed national figures in private sector job growth for most months since April 2021. The trade, transportation and utilities sectors saw notable increases last month with an addition of 4,400 jobs.
Resources like Employ Florida and CareerSource Florida continue to provide support for job seekers through various programs including tailored career counseling and skills assessments.
With more than 387,000 jobs posted online in December alone, Floridians have ample opportunities to find work using these resources at no cost.
