The American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF), with the support of Nestlé Purina PetCare, has named Sirius, a 6-year-old Maremma sheepdog, as the 2025 Farm Dog of the Year. Sirius is owned by Jorge and Debbie Garcia-Bengochea, members of the Florida Farm Bureau. The announcement was made at the AFBF convention.
Sirius plays a vital role in safeguarding a herd of miniature therapy horses that provide comfort to adults and children in hospitals, hospice programs, assisted living facilities, as well as families, veterans, and first responders who have experienced traumatic events. "Guardian dogs are like having a 24-7 security system on the farm," said Jorge Garcia-Bengochea. "I feel great about the farm being safe, and very proud of what Sirius is doing to protect the horses."
Purina has contributed prizes for this year's contest including $5,000 in prize money, a trophy plate, a year's supply of Pro-Plan dog food and other Purina products for Sirius. Purina has been committed to improving pet health through scientifically based nutritional innovations for 130 years.
Jack Scott, vice president of sustainable sourcing at Nestlé Purina PetCare stated: “Purina is proud to once again partner with the Farm Bureau to celebrate the vital role of farm dogs like Sirius. Our industry depends on the hard work of farmers, and these remarkable dogs play a crucial part in supporting their farm operations.” He added that pets and people are better together and expressed pride in highlighting contributions from four-legged companions through this award.
