The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has announced two virtual public meetings to discuss updates to the rule language concerning bass taxonomy. These meetings will address recent taxonomic changes that distinguish Florida bass (Micropterus salmoides) from largemouth bass (Micropterus nigricans).
The meetings are scheduled for Tuesday, February 11, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m., and Wednesday, February 12, from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. The aim is to update the rule language in line with these taxonomic changes to maintain consistency and streamline regulations aimed at conserving Florida bass genetics. It is noted that these updates will not impact existing bag and length limits for black bass species.
Participants in the meetings will have the chance to ask questions and provide feedback during a designated public comment period.
To participate, interested individuals should email Shelby.McCarty@MyFWC.com. Upon registration, participants will receive a confirmation email with instructions on how to join the virtual meetings via computer, tablet, or cell phone.
