The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) announced that the spawning season closure for permit fish within the Special Permit Zone in south Florida will commence on April 1. This closure affects both state and federal waters from Cape Sable on the Gulf coast and stretches south of Cape Florida on the Atlantic coast, encompassing the Florida Keys and Biscayne Bay south of the Rickenbacker Causeway.
During this period, the fishing and collection of permit within the designated zones are prohibited in order to protect the species during its vital spawning season. The restriction will remain in effect until the reopening on August 1.
