Florida has distributed over 7,800 recruitment bonuses to new law enforcement officers through the state's Florida Law Enforcement Recruitment Bonus Payment Program, Governor Ron DeSantis announced. The program, which was introduced in 2022, offers a one-time $5,000 bonus post-tax to newly hired officers. The latest recipients include officers in Marion County, with 660 bonuses given statewide recently.
Governor DeSantis highlighted Florida's strong support for law enforcement, saying, “When other states were defunding their police, demonizing law enforcement, and kneecapping their criminal justice system, we rewarded our law enforcement for their service.” He personally awarded bonuses in Marion County to appreciate the officers' commitment.
The state has attracted over 1,700 officers from 49 states and two territories, including more than 500 from states like California, Illinois, and New York, where law enforcement faces more challenges. Each new recruit has benefitted from the $5,000 bonus, contributing to a total of more than $53 million distributed by the program.
Florida Secretary of Commerce J. Alex Kelly praised the state's efforts under DeSantis’ leadership, stating, “We remain committed to strengthening the resources available to law enforcement and helping in their mission to set the standard for combating illegal immigration.”
Beyond the recruitment bonus, new Florida law enforcement officers are offered financial stability, career growth, health and retirement benefits, student loan forgiveness, and home loan programs. For additional details on the bonus program, visit FloridaJobs.org/Recognition-and-Recruitment.
