Florida has awarded over 7,800 recruitment bonuses to new law enforcement officers under the Florida Law Enforcement Recruitment Bonus Payment Program, Governor Ron DeSantis announced in Ocala. The latest group of bonuses was allocated to officers in Marion County, alongside 660 other recruits across the state.
The initiative, launched in 2022, offers a one-time $5,000 bonus after taxes to newly employed officers, highlighting Florida’s commitment to law enforcement support. Governor DeSantis stated, "When other states were defunding their police, demonizing law enforcement, and kneecapping their criminal justice system, we rewarded our law enforcement for their service.”
As of now, more than 1,700 officers have relocated to Florida from 49 states and two territories, including over 500 from states like California, Illinois, and New York. Each officer has received the $5,000 bonus, leading to the distribution of over $53 million.
Florida Secretary of Commerce J. Alex Kelly praised the initiative, saying, "Under Governor DeSantis’ leadership, Florida has led the nation in recruiting law enforcement officials and implementing strong immigration policies.” The program offers benefits like financial stability, upward mobility, excellent health and retirement plans, and student loan forgiveness.
