Today, FloridaCommerce announced a substantial award exceeding $10 million dedicated to long-term recovery from Hurricane Ian. The fund will be distributed via the Rebuild Florida Hurricane Ian Hazard Mitigation Grant Match Program. It is aimed at assisting local governments eligible for the FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant Program, which mandates a 25 percent local match.
Secretary of Commerce J. Alex Kelly remarked, “Under Governor DeSantis’ leadership, FloridaCommerce has remained committed to supporting Florida communities as they rebuild and become more resilient to future storms.” He added, “These awards will help Charlotte, Manatee and St Johns Counties build and harden critical infrastructure, creating a more resilient community — benefitting Florida business and families.”
The financial assistance is distributed among three communities as follows:
- Charlotte County will receive $8,215,995 for constructing a hurricane-safe room and installing permanent generators for a crucial facility.
- Manatee County will obtain $1,015,520 to equip a critical facility with permanent generators.
- The St. Johns County School District is awarded $1,029,433 to similarly install generators in a significant facility.
The current funding builds on over $14 million already allocated through 35 projects aimed at the long-term recovery from Hurricane Ian. The resources for these initiatives originate from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Community Development Block Grant – Disaster Recovery Program.
