Attorney General James Uthmeier has announced Detective Robert Padron of the Sunrise Police Department as the recipient of the 2024 Attorney General's Law Enforcement Officer of the Year award. The ceremony recognized Detective Padron and 11 other officers for their exceptional bravery and dedication in performing their duties.
"I am proud to name Detective Robert Padron our 2024 Law Enforcement Officer of the Year," stated Attorney General James Uthmeier. "Despite being wounded, Detective Padron risked his own life to stop a violent criminal. I am honored to recognize his service and exemplary courage under fire."
Detective Padron was honored for his actions during an incident involving a violent suspect in a domestic shooting case. On December 30, 2023, a woman was attacked by her child's father outside her apartment. The suspect fled, leading to an extensive search by Sunrise Police detectives.
On January 2, 2024, detectives located the suspect at a bus terminal. As they approached, he attempted to escape and opened fire on officers. Detective Padron was injured but managed to return fire and neutralize the threat, ensuring public safety.
His actions reflect the highest standards of law enforcement. Although he is still recovering from his injuries, his commitment to protecting others continues to inspire both his department and the state of Florida.
