Attorney General James Uthmeier's Medicaid Fraud Control Unit has announced the arrest of Akimmia Lewis. She is accused of financially exploiting an elderly man in Escambia County who was under her care.
"We will not tolerate those who take advantage of vulnerable Floridians for personal gain," said Attorney General James Uthmeier. "Our office will continue to aggressively pursue criminals who abuse positions of trust and exploit the elderly."
The investigation revealed that Lewis misused her role as the victim's power of attorney by withdrawing funds from his bank account. Between August 9, 2022, and February 28, 2023, she transferred approximately $46,788.60 to her accounts and made cash withdrawals. The funds were not used for the benefit of the victim, who was residing in a nursing facility at the time.
Lewis faces one count of Exploitation of an Elderly Person or Disabled Adult (under $50,000), which is a second-degree felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison. The case will be prosecuted by the Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit through an agreement with the State Attorney’s Office for the First Judicial Circuit.
