Florida has awarded more than 8,700 recruitment bonuses to new law enforcement officers since launching the Florida Law Enforcement Recruitment Bonus Payment Program in 2022. Governor Ron DeSantis announced the latest round of bonuses in Tampa, where he personally delivered $5,000 checks to 40 new Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies. An additional 715 bonuses were distributed to recruits across the state.
The program is designed to encourage officers to serve in Florida by providing a one-time $5,000 bonus after taxes. Governor DeSantis said, “In Tampa this morning, I had the honor of hand-delivering $5,000 recruitment bonuses to 40 new Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies and thanking them for all they do to serve their communities. We continue our mission to give our law enforcement officers everything they need to keep our communities safe, such as recruitment bonuses, pay raises, resources to promote physical and mental wellbeing, and tough-on-crime policies that allow officers to do their jobs without fear of political retaliation.”
Lieutenant Governor Jay Collins added, “I’m incredibly honored to help lead the great state of Florida alongside Governor DeSantis—where we proudly stand behind our law enforcement officers. We continue taking decisive steps not only to protect their safety but also enhance the quality of their livelihoods.”
Since its inception, the program has drawn more than 1,900 law enforcement officers from other states and territories. More than 500 recruits have come from states with what officials describe as anti-police policies including California, Illinois, and New York. In total, over $58 million has been distributed through the program.
This bonus initiative is part of a broader effort by Florida officials to position the state as supportive of law enforcement. The Fiscal Year 2025-26 budget includes $49 million in pay increases for over 16,200 state sworn law enforcement officers. The minimum base pay was raised to $60,000 with significant raises for both entry-level and veteran personnel.
Additional measures include expanded wellness resources for officers, tougher penalties for crimes against law enforcement personnel, educational programs about policing in high schools, and a scholarship program covering training costs for new recruits.
